Entangled Legends?

There has been speculation that the fate of Black Adam and that of Sir Ralph Percy - who both died after coming to grief after famous horseback leaps - are somehow entangled legends. It is most unlikely to be so since the fate of Sir Ralph at least is well documented, and there are several centuries and a great mass of the Cheviot Hills to separate the events.

Trail 9 - Alnwick and District

Alnwick

Fragments of the old town walls (begun in 1433) show that Alnwick, in common with other border towns, soon learnt the importance of adequate fortifications.

The eighty foot high Tenantry Column was built in 1815 through the subscription of a thousand tenants to thank the Duke of Northumberland for reducing their rents. This was no mark of respect. The Duke had increased rents threefold in previous years and the tenants wished to demonstrate their solidarity, and their distrust of the Duke’s rare gesture of ‘philanthropy’. The Tenantry Column is also known as the ‘Farmers’ Folly’.

The Hotspur Tower is the only one of the original (four) medieval gateways to survive. The town centre contains a fine Market Cross, a Shambles, an unusual fountain (St. Michael’s Pant), an 18 th century Town Hall, and the distinctive Northumberland Hall which dates from 1826.
